How the exemption is worked out
The exempt HRA is the lowest of these three amounts:
HRA exemption is available only under the old tax regime. If annual rent is more than ₹1 lakh, the landlord's PAN must be given to the employer. From FY 2026-27 the declaration to the employer is made in Form 124 (earlier Form 12BB), which also asks for your relationship with the landlord.
